SWLL Update: February 2006

The SWLL season got off to a great start by teaming up with US Lacrosse on January 29th.  Following the Northwestern – US National Team game, the University of Central Florida defeated the University of South Florida 19-8 at the Disney Wide World of Sports.

The following weekend saw a battle of the now tied for #13’s, Miami and Central Florida where Miami came out on top 17-10 behind another 15 point (12 goals, 3 assists) performance by one of the WDIA preseason players to watch, Lisa Furst.

President’s Day weekend proved to be an important weekend in SWLL as six teams played out of league games.  In the UCF/UF Sunshine State Invitational SWLL teams went 5-3 against top 25 competition (UF, 2-1; UCF 2-1; UGA 1-2) highlighted by UCF’s upset over Navy 11-10.  Miami hosted Michigan, Pitt, UVA, Virginia Tech and Towson in their Fun in the Sun tournament and went 1-3 on the weekend with their largest loss being only by ____ goals.  Georgia Tech played the 2005 runners-up from the WCLL (Buffalo) and CPWLL (Mizzou) and went 1-0-1 on the weekend.

The success of SWLL teams that weekend led to four teams being ranked in the first top 25 poll: #5 Florida, #12 Georgia, and tied at #13 Miami and Central Florida.

The first SWLL rankings of the 2006 season are out and Georgia comes out on top with a 4-0 SWLL record.  They are followed by #2 Florida (3-0 SWLL) and #3 FSU (4-1 SWLL).  Rounding out the top half of the league are: #4 UCF (3-1), #5 Auburn (2-1), #6 Tennessee (2-1), and #7 Miami (2-1)*.

*GAA is used in determining SWLL rankings when team records are there same.
